Craig J. Leong, M.D.
Craig Leong, M.D., grew up in a small farming community in central California where his father practiced family medicine for forty years. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and attended Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.It was during medical school that Dr. Leong became attracted to the beautiful images and delicate surgery of ophthalmology. He took his residency in ophthalmology at the State University of New York and a fellowship in retinal surgery at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital - Cornell University Medical Center. During this time he was an Investigator for the Diabetic Retinopathy Vitrectomy Study. This was followed by a fellowship in medical retina with Francis L'Esperance, Jr., M.D., one of the co-developers of the argon laser for use in ophthalmology.
As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCSF School of Medicine he has actively participated in the resident teaching program for more than 20 years. Dr. Leong has a special interest in repairing complicated retinal detachments and treating diabetic retinopathy. As an Investigator for the Visudyne in Age Related Macular Degeneration Trial in 1999-2000 and as a Principal Investigator for the Genentach Focus, Marina, and Pier Studies of Lucentis in 2003-2005, Dr. Leong has remained at the forefront of the latest treatment modalities for macular degeneration.
When he is away from the office Dr. Leong is dedicated to his family. Together they do homework, play piano, attend concerts, and go to the theater and ballet. Each winter the family enjoys skiing and throughout the year they spend their vacations traveling.
